Hiking a 14,000 peak in Colorado

We planned to hike in Crested Butte (The Maroon Bells) but also do a 14,000 peak.  So we decided to fly to Montrose Colorado, rent a car and drive from there. It was a good choice because Montrose airport has plenty of services, and its just west of the real mountains so weather wasn’t likely to be an issue getting in or out.

In addition, that way we saw the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, continued on to Crested Butte for hiking, then drove over to hike to the top of Uncompahgre, one of Colorado’s many 14ers at 14,309.   It was my kids first time over 14,000 feet and they did well, although we all could feel it.
