Sprinter/Sportsmobile For Sale

For Sale: 2014 V6 Sprinter 2500 RWD built out by Sportsmobile Fresno to our specs in 2015. It is in excellent condition inside and out. Fully built out with a platform bed and lots of gear storage, it’s an adventure style van. The van has a small bathroom and closet, but also preserves as many unobscured windows as possible.

The van has 119,000 miles on it and is running strong. If you know Sprinters you know it will go far beyond this. There is a Sprinter camper van currently listed with over 300,000 miles on it. Except for emissions recalls we have not had to take it back to the dealer for major service (beyond brakes). I change the oil every 5,000 to 6,000 miles even though the spec says 10,000.

We’ve had an incredible journey with this van and with a mixture of sadness and excitement we have purchased a 4×4 model, built out by the same folks now called Field Van. We live and play in the snow so even with the automatic chains we really wanted four wheel drive. Interestingly, we built out the new van with the identical layout as the old one. You can’t find a better layout anywhere!

Buyer Inspection

We’ve listed this with Field Van (was known as Sportsmobile) and they required a full buyer inspection done on the vehicle and any problems taken care of. There were some leaking seals and the rear shocks needed replacing but nothing major. The inspection report does say “Can’t replace rear shocks”, because the automatic chains were in the way. I have since removed the automatic chains and have replaced the rear shocks.

A copy of the buyer inspection form is here:

  • Prewired for Cell phone booster. Sealed coax antennae cable from rooftop and 12V power is accessible from attic space above driver.
  • Master entertainment power switch that controls all of the above.

Sleeps up to 4

In addition to the large platform bed, there is a platform custom-cut to lay across the front seats, plus a mattress. It measures 5’2″ across at that point but our 5’5″ daughter sleeps there comfortably by sleeping in a diagonal.

The “gaucho” seat folds down and the van had a plywood foldable box with a cushion that turned that into a bed. Except we kept that box/cushion for our new sprinter. So this can be a bed, but you will need to build or get a box/crate and a cushion.

Diesel furnace, winter insulation kit and automatic chains

The van was used a lot in the winter. A lot. We took it to Utah, Canada and spent hundreds of nights in the Sierra while skiing. We commonly used it with temps in the 20’s and down below zero degrees. Below 10 you do need to be mindful of the temperature of the Lithium Ion battery kept in the “garage”, which can’t be charged when the battery is below 32 degrees.

The van includes Onspot automatic chains that can be deployed by pressing a switch on the dash. They work well for packed snow and snow up to 6 inches deep. We have used them quite a bit. We do take them off in the summer as they reduce the clearance. They are not currently on the van. Here is a Youtube Video on the system: Onspot Automatic Chains.

The van is equipped with easy to reach water drains for cold weather storage. (My neighbor has to blow out his water system on his built-out Sprinter).

Safety Lights / Horn

An RV safety expert said that in his opinion, safer than a gun, would be to turn on all the outside lights and honk the horn if someone is threatening your van. Thus I installed additional switches for the outside lights above the bed. I also installed an air-horn and this can be activated from the bed or from the driver’s seat.

Suspension

The van is about 2-3 inches higher in clearance than a normal 2-wheel drive van, which has been beneficial on rough dirt roads. This increased clearance is because of the larger tires and also an upgraded suspension. For example the rear leaf springs have an additional leaf which helps with loading and also clearance.
