My son and I took another father and son for a weekend camping and sight-seeing over Crater Lake. We stayed at Prospect State airport in Oregon (just a short flight from Crater Lake) where they have nice on-site camping, and a small town just a short walk away for food. We even walked to a waterfall were the kids played in the water.
