Typically, you’ll see us doing human-powered adventures, but what the heck, this was fun. This adventure involved jet-skiing at about 50 mph from Whittier Alaska up a fjord to view a glacier.
These are beefy jet skis that I think are probably almost impossible to turn over. I think the bulk of their business is from cruise ships and it’s probably important for them to return the same number of guests back to the cruise ships that they took.
The tour involved not only glaciers but some beautiful waterfalls.
I did feel a little guilty though. At first it seemed like the fjord was empty, so why not jet ski? But then I saw two groups of kayakers. If I were them, I would be annoyed at the stream of jet skiers running up and down the fjord. There were three businesses at the dock running jet ski tours so it wasn’t just us. There is a human guide that is there to make sure you don’t approach wildlife or spin donuts with the jet skis, but still.
I mentioned this elsewhere but I don’t recommend flying your plane into Whittier. It’s a short one-way strip and Whittier is well known for high winds and rainy weather. I was lucky enough to have Bets driving our van, so I landed and left the plane at Cooper’s Landing and we drove into Whittier. Besides, you need to experience driving through the famous Whittier tunnel.
