Crossing the Border
Placerville CA to Hope, BC. We wanted to put in a couple of long days so we could spend more time up north, so the first day was around 7-8 hours in the air. I picked up Graeme in Auburn, CA about 6:30 am and north we flew. We landed in Abbotsford British Columbia, an official port of entry, to go through customs.
It was getting late, but the hamlet of Hope on the Fraser River was far more appealing than Abbotsford, so we did the extra 30 minutes of flight to land on the surprisingly bumpy grass field. If you land there don’t land short. It’s a big field and there are markers to mark the beginning of the runway, pretty far out in the field. I didn’t see the markers and landed in some pretty rough grass. No big deal but rough.
We set up camp on the grass and a few old-timers came by to ask about who we were, where we were headed, etc. One fellow asked if were going to Stewart BC / Hyder US and I said no, I hadn’t heard of them. He was adamant we go there so Betsy and I did on the way back down (more on those towns later). Stewart turned out to be a great stop and I appreciate that gentleman letting me know.
