A Beautiful Butte, But Not Really a Butte

Outside of Hanksville is Factory Butte with an attractive attribute: it is located in just plain BLM land, not in a national park or national monument. Which means there isn’t the height or terrain restrictions of other nearby places. Apparently drone and ultralight pilots also know this so my head was on a swivel during this flight. I think drone laws now prohibit drones from flying that high but I’ve seen drone footage from the top of the Butte. I would assume there isn’t much enforcement out there.

In order to keep my head outside I didn’t mess with the camera at all – just turned it on at Hanksville airport and let it run the entire flight. So I was pleased with the capture.

There was a fellow at the airport and it turned out to the general contractor directing an improvement project for the airport. He has worked on lots of airports but hasn’t flown much. So we agreed on a deal – I would take him up for a flight (above the butte) and he would take me into town to pick up packages (long story on that) at the Hanksville post office.

Fair deal!

(By the way, Hanksville is a true adventure town. Mars Research station, Goblin park, Little Wildhorse Canyon, North Wash including Leprechaun and Blarney canyons, and more. What a list!)

  1. Very cool. It would be super nice if Hanksville airport had car rentals or Turo. So much to explore around there.

Thank you for sharing. More is better.

    1. Second that… Could bike to Goblin, but hard to take a bunch of camping gear that way! Turo is so great when it works, I wish more people signed up with it at these smaller airports. Hanksville is a gateway to so many awesome things. Some of the Moab guide companies will meet you ou there if you want to do the Leprechaun slot canyons, highly recommend!

      1. Leprechaun is tight! Literally. Great canyon(s).
