There is a lot of rock climbing in the Mammoth / Bishop area, but Tuolumne Meadows is a magical place, even if it is a little crowded. My daughter and I flew into Mammoth, rented a car and were up in Tuolumne at 10:00 am after a 45 minute drive. Even with a plane it seemed like it was going to be further away than that. There is an airport at Lee Vining, but there are no rental cars and it can get very windy there.
